The Poke or PE Robot is a robot that has been especially made for spot welding body panels, such as boots and bonnets (hoods and LCDs) where the spot cannot be seen on the finished surface. To do this the robot carries the electrode tip and pushes down onto the panel which is held by a jig. This requires the robot to exert far more force than in normal service and therefore requires substantial modification to a normal arm and controller. Changes include a shorter arm (reducing reach to 2.25m) no balance weight and a fan to help cool axis 2 and 3 motors which are also upgraded. The controller modifications include different servo drive cards (to take account of the uprated motors) and a change to the software to allow the robot to exert far more force than normally allowed. As the robot is not as balanced as a standard arm the handling capacity on the 6400 poke is limited to 75kg but this allows plenty for the weld gun it will carry. The force that the robot can ultimately put onto the workpiece depends on the angle of the wrist but typically it will be betweeen 3500N and 5000N.
